Greetings all,
when i try to mash the pedal, i can't get the tranny to kick down at all. i know the switch was working, i could manually trip it and hear the air flap work on my old hood.
question; is there some way to adjust the switch? or do i just put a piece of rubber hose on the rod?
The switch is very easy to adjust. Climb under there and push the plunger all the way up (it'll have some resistance but will go). Then mash the pedal again. If it's an old worn out switch, it won't stay adjusted for long, unfortunately. Joe

Had the same problem with mine. I used electrical tape on the rod. Works very well now. As long as you know it's in working order, the tape will do the trick...
Are you sure it is not making the switch? Check to see if you get 12 volts to the wire on the trans. If you do then the detent solenoid is bad. Not hard to replace but messy. You just need to drop the pan and it is right there.
The trans has a solenoid in it (in the trans oil pan) that is activated by the same switch that opens the hood door. So... you need to make sure the trans solenoid is plugged in and listen for the click. The vacuum modulator also controls low speed kickdown from 3-2 but will never get 2-1,3-1.... or 3-2 at speeds above 45 mph. The kickdowns just mentioned are controlled by the solenoid. I really don't know if a bad modulator would cause your problem but it is certainly possible to have a bad modulator and an inoperative kickdown solenoid
