Default Edelbrock problems??

Just replaced my Q-jet(crappy idle, starting & running rich issues) with an Edelbrock 1406,& although the idle & response is much better, there is a couple of issues I have.
First the left side mixture screw has no effect screwed in or out,& second when cruising just off idle, there is a surge & hesitation until I either give it more gas or slow down to an idle. This is a remanufactured carb.Is there anyone who has had these problems or can give me some pointers.

Thanks Neil.

Did you use an adapter plate? The 1406 is a square bore and the QJ is a spread bore. Did you buy a rebuilt carb from edelbrock or another vendor? I used a new 1903 on my 77 and it works perfectly.

Neil,
The first key question has been posed: the 1406 is a square bore. I have one on my 1967. What intake are you mounting it on?

Yes I used a spread bore to square bore adaptor, the type with the four holes,as opposed to the open plenum type.
I bought the carb off a vendor on ebay as a remanufactured carb,in appearance it looks brand new.Hopefully I have not made a big mistake here.

I bought a reman'd from Edelbrock 2 summers ago and it has been a joy. Just slapped it on straight out the the box, no more gas leaks like I had with the Holley, downside lost some hp over the Holley. Check the jets etc and clean it out, sometimes some dirt gets in there during packaging.

The Edelbrock is a great carb and easy to maintain. Take a little time and remove it. Blow out all the passage ways and make sure the floats are set to 7/16 off the air horn.

The fact that your idle screw does little makes me think of some dirt clogging. Remember to have both idle screws turned out the exact same amount.

Keep us posted on the results. Once that sucker is dialed in you'll be very happy with it.

Hesitation and surge are signs of a lean condition. Check for obstruction in the idle/ off idle systems. You may also want to look at the power piston spring. It may be a little weak. It may not be allowing the main system to come on line soon enough.

Thanks to all the replies,I have stripped the carb down since my original post, very simple to work on,blown out all the air passages with compressed air, rebuilt it,& put it back on the car, still the same problem exists.Could it be that one of the drilled passages has not been drilled through, would this coarse an off idle stumble?

Make sure you don't have a leak in the ported vacuum hose. Also, what sort of motor are we talking about here?

I would check the throttle cable. Is it hanging up too short to let the carb return to idle?
