I've been trying to sell my 73 Corvette and an interested party pointed out that the"Target Master" sticker on the valve cover means that it is a crate motor....I'd always thought it was the original motor as I bought it from the original owner who claimed it was a matching numbers car, I had no reason to believe other wise. So my question now is:where is the engine number??? and how can I tell if the engine number matches the vin???
FirmCamaro, On my 76 model the way to tell is to look at the block just in front of the right side head. On my 350 engine the block sticks out forward of the head about a half inch or so and the numbers are stamped there. The last numbers of your car serial number will be there if it is the one that came with the car. Mine has a 16S and then the 6 numbers of the car serial number. I was told that the 1 means Chevy, the 6 means car and the S means St. Louis.
good luck
There should be 2 number blocks on this stamp pad.
One for the type of engine etc, the other one with the car's VIN.
If there is only one number block stamped, it is a crate engine.
