Default plunger switch

I have a newly purchased '77 and am still learning about it. There is a plunger switch hanging loose from under the dash to the left of the steering column. It has its own bracket, and a rubber bumper that looks like a tire valve cover. I haven't done the upside down and under the dash inspection yet, but does anyone have the easy answer to what it is? I tried depressing it, and nothing. Thanks.

That sounds like the headlight override or "pulldown" switch. It normally stays in the up/in position. If you ever need to change a headlight bulb you pull that **** down before shutting off the engine which releases the vacuum and the headlights will stay up.

sounds like the valve that opens the headlights with out turning them on,its used for areas that get snow/ice so the headlights don't get frozen down. it also will keep the headlights up after they turn off. it only works when the engine is running...

Default plunger switch info

Thank you both for the info. I will check this out. Since it is now dangling, what is the normal position?

It should be attached to underside of the dash just about where you describe it.....with 2 screws I believe. The override switch is actually mounted to a metal bracket that is mounted to the underside dash. The plunger will be pointing straight down......just left of the steering column. I hope this is making sense...

Try working the switch with your engine running and see if your headlights pop up. Do your brake lights work? (description could also be a brake lite switch)

Yeah the brake lights work, so that leaves the headlight thing. I don't really want to test that just yet, because of another problem I have, which is that the headlight door arms are scraping the front clip when the lights open just enough to scrape the paint. Dynamic Corvettes' website said that my V-bar headlight mounting bar might be corroded and sagging, which turned out to not be the case, but that the fiberglass has delaminated and is popping up in that area. Soo, just another project added to the list. Thanks.

If you owned a '70, I'd say that was the cable to reset the odometer. On mine, I push up and turn until the odo reads zero... Do the '77s have electronic speedometers/ odometers??

Now that you mention it, I was also trying to figure out how to reset the trip odo. I really need a good manual.

The 77's still have the **** you push up and turn to reset the trip odometer. Just an electric tach which started in 75 with the HEI setup I believe. And yes, the second **** directly under the steering column for the headlights.
