What solvent will remove urethane window sealer out of my window trim without a whole lot of labor ? My trim has been glued to the glass because a lot of the clips had broke . (poor fix) I am going to remove my back glass and replace the clips but I need to get all this urethane out of the trim channels .
I used laquer thinner or mineral spirits on my firebird, after a few minutes, the stuff flakes off if you rub it with a wooden stick. Nothing dissolves it. Joe
Trying looking up urethane solvents at www.ask.com. (This is the Ask Jeeves search engine). Sample question: What are solvents for urethane?.
A commercial plastic products vendor will probably have some suggestions. Also, since the trim pieces are stainless steel - you're in luck. I don't think there's any organic solvent that will have any effect on stainless.
I think methylene chloride (aka methyl chloride) will work. It'll attack and destroy just about any organic material (like urethane plastic). Methylene chloride is pretty hazardous in it's pure state. Don't get any on your skin (wash it off quickly), in your eyes, or breath it's fumes. After soaking, the methylene chloride is easily washed away and removed with water. Methyl chloride can be found in paint stores, hardware stores, body shop product stores. Try to get the high concentration stuff. Often it's sold in a gel form to prevent splashing when you pour it out. It is often sold to the general public in very diluted concentrations so if you have a choice of brands, get the high concentration stuff.
