If I was to go to a boneyard to find a set of vortecs what vehicles would I be looking for? Did the factory ever install aluminum vortecs on any vehicles?
Vortec Heads are not aluminum. They would be on 96-98 (and some 99 3/4 and 1 tons). Also Tahoes and Suburbans. I don't believe that any would be on an '01.

There have been many Vortec posts in the performance forum of Team Chevelle. An engineer from GM Performance Parts occasionally posts there. According to him, there is no real differance between the 906 and 062 heads. HTH Wes
I must have missed an email or two from the person that wanted the heads because he contacted me. My mistake. The heads are not available because they are sold. Thanks

Interesting. I need to spend some more time under my DD's hood, I guess. I was assuming "Vortec 5300" = "Vortec heads."
The '96-98 062 and 906 Vortec heads are cast iron. The later, aluminum "Vortec" heads are different and will not bolt to a small block Chevy engine. The later aluminum "Vortec" heads are based on the LS1 series of engines. HTH Wes

The new Vortec motors are 4.8, 5.3, 5.7, and 6.0. These are gen 3 motors and will not interchange with any gen 1 parts. These are 1997(?) to present and go in most GM trucks and sport utes. Also Corvettes, GTO's and the f bodies (before the production ended). These all have aluminum heads except some early 6.0, which were iron.
The Vortec heads you refer to are in the previously mentioned trucks. I have no idea why GM called the gen 3 Vortecs the same name as the old style, but it confuses many people. Now when you retrofit that 5.3 into a vette, we would all like to hear about it! They make an aluminum version that is sure to be a good hot rod swap.

I don't think a 5.3 into a 'Vette would be the best swap out there unless it was into a C2 or C3 destined for cruising only. For the money I'd stick with LS-1 or an LS-6. More power = Cool.
The aluminum-blocked version Gen III SBC comes in the SSR, I believe, and I've seen them installed in MANY sand buggies. (And Viper V-10s and LS-1s and Northstars, too.)

To clarify, they were available on the 96-99 C/K style trucks. In 99, both the C/K and the Silverado were available at dealerships. Both were sold as 99 models.

I think the 5.3 would be a great swap. Thats close to a 327, Right? Let me tell you, with a few minor mods that motor would be a real screamer in a c3, and not to mention cheaper to come by than an LS6 or LS1. Also easier to supercharge a fuel injected mill, if you could find room under the hood.
You are right. They also come in the SSR. I thought about that last night after I posted. By the way, I work at one of the facilities where these are made. We currently only machine iron blocks, but assemble iron and aluminum. What a cool place it is to work!!
