Default Advice on Side Pipes.

I want to put side pipes on my '74, but have a few questions.

I am cheap, ok. So I don't want to buy the expensive side pipe type headers. I would like to use some aftermarket headers, build my own exuaust pipes (a friend has a muffler shop) to go from the collectors to the side pipes and use some type of glass pack (can you say Purple Hornie ) behind the Fiberglass covers.

Comments, questions suggestions ?

I think you answered your own question through the " "

It sounds like you are going to invent a whole lot of trouble for very little gain in either:
1)Performance
2)Looks

If you really want to keep yourself amused for a while just to realize that you are going to tear it down after a week of driving and then dig deep for the real gain and proper stuff, then.....

.....I would venture to guess that your easiest bet would be shorties for ease of manipulating your custom exhaust to fit to the shorties and then to the side of the car with the fewest of bends.

You can then take a 1"-1 1/2" tube and weld a number of spirals to the outside of it to make something with an OD of say around 2 7/8". Then mount this concoction inside a 3" tube that fits behind the fiberglass covers.....and VOILA

.....you just wasted one perfectly good week, but had fun with your buddy and a few gallons of ale

There is a set of headers called factory sidepipe headers from Hedman Headers. I searched on Summit and Jegs to get you a link but couldnt find them. So you might want to call Summit or Hedman and see if they have them still.

On these headers instead of the collector going to the back of the car, the collector goes to the side and stops about 4 inches shy of the side of the car. So that gives you enough room to make a 90* bend and start your sidepipes. I am running them and the only problem I had with then was that after a few weeks they started to get a little surface rust so I pulled them off, sanded them, and gave them a nice coating of high temp paint. It only takes me about 15 minutes per side to pull them off. I can get a picture if you want.

Hi

SUMMIT sells cheap side pipes, called PATRIOT and DYNOMAX.
They are complete , chrome pipes, inserts and heat shields for 200 + $ only.
Can't go wrong with those to start.
