Default distributor problem

my distributor is causing the car to quit running. It will idle ok but when it is reved up it dies, I can move the wires around on the trigger (think thats what it is called) that run to the ign module and the car will start again.
I am guessing it is the trigger since the module was replaced this summer.
My question is, since the car has around 91K miles and the distributor is probably original and I have to pull the dist to replace the trigger anyway, what is a good replacement? I am looking at the Accell HEI at summit, anyone use one of these?

One quick thing to check is to see if silicone grease was used under the mod so it wouldn't burn up. Not sure what year your car is,but I had mod fail in a short time when the "mechanic" didn't use the grease.

Default Hit the books.

I've used the Accel rebuild before and worked great. But u may want to try and rebuild urself. Not a lot of parts and good cores are plenty at the boneyards. Any sb or BB Chevy HEI dist will fit. If u have the time dissasemble and repair for the experience. This will help u performance tune the ignitionn. David Vizards "how to" books on How to make HP vol I and Max performance Chevy sb on a Budget describe HEI overhaul. If in a rush then that Accel piece from summit is just fine. cardo0

My distributor crapped out earlier this year, it was the original, 27 yrs. old. I looked into rebuiliding myself but found that it was more expensive to replace the components then to replace it with a brand new Proform Performance Distributor with a high performance module, curve kit and new cap. This way I was not putting new parts in my old distributor which would still have the old bushings and shaft in it when I was done. I bought mine on Ebay for $110.00 and just dropped it in, set up the timing and was done. What a difference from the original!! Unless you own a chrome bumper NCRS car that you want to keep orginal, I think this the way to go. My car is a rubber bumper 77 and it would not make a difference valuewise which distributor is in it, so I felt why not take advantage of all new components and the increase in performance as well.

i also had problems with 30+ dictributer-mosture problems- car stalling ect... i went with the m.s.d. system (dist- 6a box-coil- and wires) -put the old one in the box on a shelf- for-whenever.

I just ordered a Mallory HEI unit from Summit. Hopefully it will be as good as they say it is.
