OK, dead horse-beating time again.....as decision time approaches (not talkng about the election) for the just-bought '77 that had many more miles than seller represented:
A. Rebuild the L48 and stock tranny w/M21; or
B. Drop in a more powerful modern power & drive source?
If "B.", a Chevy crate or something like a 383?
I like the '77 or would not have kept it with the addt'l mileage/wear/tear. It looks great with a really nice hi-quality paint job of an uncommon original color. Runs & shifts good/smooth right now.....but - leaks, mild oil burn & father time tells me days are numbered. So, the eternal question - keep it stock as much as possible OR go for the more modern power & efficiency? Anoter factor: not planning to sell for a long time...playing for keeps!

I plan on keeping mine for a long time also. That being said, I have built mine like I wanted too. I put in a 5 speed and bigger cam and aluminum heads. The car runs great now and I would not hesitate to drive it anywhere. The one regret I do have is, I wish now I would have went the 383 route with my motor. Why, I don't really know, but I wish I would have. My current setup gets down the road plenty good. Just one of those "What if?" things I guess.
