Default Electric Fan Wiring Question

The Orange wire can be switched to the ignition or not. I'm thinking I want the fan to operate if the engine is hot, whether the engine is on or not.

Cons would be battery drain, and possible finger injury if it kicks on unexpectedly.

Pro would be the engine will stay happier at shut off on a hot day.

Am I forgetting a pro or a con?

Also, if I wire it unswitched, do I take both the Yellow and the Orange wires to the starter, or do I send the Orange to the fuse box unswitched terminal? Is there a difference?

Thanks.

I'm not sure running the fan after shut-down is a benefit as water has stopped circulating. As you said, battery drain and missing fingers are the downside.

This issue has been discussed many times here. Try a search in the archives for "electric fan wiring".

I chose not to run my fan after shut down. I had it wired to keep the fan running, when I pulled in the garage the fan would run for 20 minutes and only cool the water in the radiator. I could not see any benefit in this so I changed the wiring so that the fan only runs when the ignition is on. Works good for me this way.

I kept mine wired the way you =described. Fans still run after engine shut down. Doesn't matter to me because whenever I shut the engine off I almost always go to the battery and flip the battery cutoff switch. Unless I'm tuning (fixing) something in the engine and will need start and stop the engine frequently.

I've got the yellow wires running to the 30A fuses and then the starter.

The orange I've got tapped into a red lead (I think running off the winshield wipers(Bubba did).

Good point. Come to think of it, my engine driven fan never ran after shutdown, so I guess the engine can take the heat.

I've got my choke lead in the ignition slot of the fuse box. Can I splice into this?

Thanks for all the good help.

One more question...The instructions say to put the in-line fuse on the direct battery connection within 12" of the battery and suggests a ring terminal attachment. Does the battery connection at the starter "count" as the battery terminal?
