Hey guys I was looking for a replacement distributor for my 76 L48. I found one on the net for $129. However when I talked to the guy he said I need the mechnical tech drive type which is $399. Now I have an HEI setup and my tech runs off of one wire off the distributor and the one I found for $129 is also HEI. Will this not work?? I really didn't want to spend $400 for a distributor. Anyways please ASAP as I would like to get this going. Oh by the way I am also changing the timing gear set and chain is single roller ok.
In '75 corvette and most other GM vehicle went to the HEI set-up. You do however need the early HEI distributor with the advance wieghts and vacuum advance. I'm not sure when they stopped using these but the later units used a computer controled spark advance so They won't work
This is a mechanical tach drive distributor I have in my basement. You will note the threaded stud for the tach cable attachment. That was long gone by 1976, replaced by an electronic link. Someone gave you some bad advice.
You should be able to get a basic HEI dist from any auto parts store for less than $100. I think I paid like $79 for mine (had to get a new one when the advance weights pin broke).
Added a recurve kit and new vac can per Lar's recommendation later but HEI's are not that expensive (especially for a stock engine).
$116.99 at Autozone. Probably about the same at Schucks or NAPA. OK, $124 at NAPA. (EDIT) And you can always return it if there is a problem (limited lifetime warranty).
Nothing special about the basic L-48 HEI. You can always add a recurve kit or custom vacuum can later per Lar's tuning paper (at www.corvettefaq.com).
