I am researching body shops to do my fiberglass work and paint. One guy told me he doesn't gelcoat because that's what cracks causing paint to crack. Does this sound right? I though gelcoating was required. Does anyone have any tips for finding a good shop other than seeing their work? Questions I should be asking?
This is probably going to start a long discussion about gelcoat but here goes. I'm in the process of painting my '69 and was planning on gelcoating. I went to a painter that showed me some of his work, which was very good, and he'd done several Vettes. Another painter was there and both recommended not gelcoating. They convinced me that the gelcoat was just part of the old GM process of making the fiberglass and that the new epoxy primers will do the job just as well or better. And alot less work. The "less work" won me over. And the several years of experience with good Vette paint jobs spoke for itself.
I'm now busy sanding every possible surface on my car and looking forward to taking it to the painter in January.
