Default BB cam

454 I bought came with flat-top pistons, 049 heads, edel 2-0 intake. The cam that came new in the box with it is not a comp or crane, can't remember the brand, but the intake lift is .476, exhaust .501
duration @ .050 is 204 intake, exh 214. The guy I bought it from was going to build this motor for a big truck. My 72 has 3.08 gears and will have 4 sp, but see myselfe going to Keisler 5 sp and 3.55s in the future. Anybody see anything wrong with this cam? Any suggestions?

This thing is even milder than the LS5 cam. If it were me I'de go with durations in the 220 to 230 range. Depending on the compression, you may get away with useing regular gas in your torque monster.

Oh, then I won't be using this cam. I don't mind a slightly lopey idle. I want the torque and I want it to rev to 6000 without sweating...

Do you want to stick with a hydraulic cam or do you want a solid lifter cam. If you want to stick with a hydraulic cam the Comp Cams XE274 would work well in your vehicle. The 3.08 gears will hurt you a little bit but the 4 speed will definitely help out. The specs on the XE274 are:

274/286 Advertised Duration, .552/.555 Lift, 110LSA

The split duration on the exhaust side well help benefit you if you have a restrictive exhaust. The cam that you have listed is too small for a big block IMO. The 454 cubic inches will help tame down the numbers of the XE274.

Yep, too small. You didn't mention exhaust setup, but with headers you may have to run the mixture a little fat to run pump gas and the Comp cam.

With flat top pistons and 049 heads, your engine probably has around 8:1 compression. The performer intake will start to nose over around 5000-5200 RPM in a 454.

The cam you have sounds like a generic SSI/Summit/PAW grind. I ran the next size up, in a 454 truck engine with a Performmer. It was pretty much done by 4700-4800 RPM. Crane has a 272 cam with .515" lift and 215* @ .050" that would work nicely with your combo. If you like comp cams, a 268 (not XE) would work nicely with your combo. HTH Wes

I'd swap the cam no doubt, hell I had a hotter cam inmy 327 If you want full vacuum and slight lope I'd go with a cam around 224 duration.

Default Compression dictates cam

If you have 049 heads and flat tops in a 454 you will only have 8.5 to 1 compression. Comined with a torquer 2 single plane manifold, you dont have much room for a big cam with out loosing heaps of torque. I recommend upping compression, then you can add a big cam.
