A couple weeks ago I decided to drive my 79 out to a business dinner, everything was fine until I turned the keys over to a valet parking attendent. Mistake #1. After being assured that the car would be parked immediately and turned off, I turned off the master switch to the cooling fans. Fifteen minutes later I was told my car was in the middle of the lot smoking. Need less to say the pressure from the now overheated cooling system had blown the hose off the thermostat housing emptying the entire contents of my new Be Cool radiator all over everything. After reconnecting the hose, refilling the radiator with fresh water and rinsing off all the coolant I drove the car home. Spent the next few days cleaning polishing and repairing the damage. The engine runs fine however I've noticed that the water temp is now 15 degress higher than previously maintained, 185 before 200-205 now.
Question: What other damage should I be looking for that would cause this higher than normal temp increase?
Several things could cause the increase in temp. How old is the thermastat? Are the electric fans turning on when they should? Could their wires have been shorted when the hose blew? Are the rubber seals between the rad and rad support intact? Too many variables to isolate your problem until you do some diagnosis. Also, could a head have cracked? Are you loosing coolant when you drive it now? Another thought; could you have a vapor lock--air in the system not allowing the coolant to circulate? start with the easiest and work your way thru the possibilities? Good luck!!!!!
