Default Looking for Short Block Big Block

I'm looking for any recommendations where I can find a good BB short block. I plan on a mild build of roughly 500HP/500 tq. Any help would be appreciated.

I got mine by buying a wrecked 92 Chevy Tow Truck. At the time I did not know where to start looking, and when I came across this, I paid $1,500 for the whole truck.

The bonus of getting the complete vehicle is that I also got the serpentine belt set-up and the hydraboost brake booster. I parted out the rest of the truck and made back what I paid for it.

The main thing I will be using from the 454 is the block, crank, and rods. The rest of it I will be buying aftermarket. I am shooting for the 500 HP range.

Best of Luck finding your Big Block!

matchframe, thanks for your input. I've been scouring the recyclers here in NJ and so far I haven't located a single 454. I've found a few on the web but don't have any experience with the companies. The guys I found on the web are D&B Machine in Phoenix and Larry's Performance in CA. If anyone has any experience with either of these shops please let me know.

I found a 402 out of a 71 Chevelle. I know the 402 is an overbored 396 from the factory other than that I really don't know much about the block. Anybody have opinions on this block? HP/tq possibilities, can it be bored over again to achieve more CU's? Any help is appreciated.

Steve, what are the HP and Tq numbers you got out of your 402? Any problems I should be aware of with fitting it in a C3? I would suspect not as it is a standard GM engine. I just may buy this block afterall.

Thanks, Fran

Hi

I have a 396 Camaro block bored to 427 + 30 over.
But I heard that this is overdoing the limit .
A 396 block can be bored to 427, but should not go more.
Well, I have it it my Vette for over 10.000 Miles now and driving it with L71 solid lifter square port heads and a 750 CFM double pumper carb without any issues.
396 blocks are very solid.
