Default cylinder head gasket

I'm about to swap my steel heads for alum. heads and I need to order some gaskets. Anybody have a recommendation for brands? Anything special I need to know?

What does the cylinder head manufacturer recommend?

I used the recommended FelPro 1003 with my Edelbrock heads and am pretty happy.

I used the LS-7 gaskets from Scoggins.

I don't know I bought the heads used. They are Edelbrock performer rpm's. Those are the same as yours aren't they?

I like to use Ultra Seal. You can get them from Jegs for about 48 bucks

So far Ultra seal and felpro 1003. Felpro makes the ultra seal line too don't they or is that Mr. Gasket? I was going to order everything at once Jughead so Scoggins is probably out. Seems Jegs or Summit is usually cheaper anyway.

Fel-pro 1010. They have a pre-compressed copper wire ring that won't score the head. The 1003 has a steel wire ring which can create an indentation on aluminum heads.

For a small-block you could use stock 91 L98 Corvette gaskets from the General.

I agree. A friend who used to race pro stock in the late sixties has a shop doing general automotive repairs on G.M. front engine rear drive cars, mostly 3rd & 4th gen f-bodies. Virtually every engine that has had Felpro head gaskets installed when he tore it down he found the head gaskets blown. The stock l98 head gaskets that have blown have been because someone had a water leak and kept driving. When he takes apart an engine with Felpro head gaskets, the gaskets peel right off. Wipe the heads and block with a rag, and he is ready to check deck and head straightness before rebuilding. With the l98 gaskets, the gasket is so impregnated to the heads and block that both need to be scraped to clean off the old head gaskets! The stock G.M. head gaskets virtually split in half when you pull the heads.

Go with what the manufacturer recommends. Aluminum heads expand at a different rate than the iron block, so you need to have the gaskets meet the two metals half way.

It seems Edelbrock suggests for the Fel #1003. If you get Edelbrocks, I'd follow their recommendation.

I bought AFRs, and they also recommend Fel 1003s. Very, very nice gasket.

I didn't know there were so many choices or thata gasket would cost so much I'm glad I saved up a bit extra money for this. If Edelbrock suggests fel pro 1003 thats probably what I need to get. Thanks guys
