I recently attempting to install a fan relay but I had a really hard time.
First, I could not find a decent spot to mount the damn thing. It is has an adjustable thermal unit, so you have to be abe to get at it with a screwdriver. Also, the battery is behind the back seat, so the only thing I could think of was to run it to the battery side of the starter or right off the alternator. Lastly, the damn ground. I can't seem to find a ground the car. I think I might mount it next to the alternator and get a ground and power from that. THe only proble mis that the relay is controlled by another relay that gives it power only when the care is on, so I have to run that to a powere source that is on, only when the car is on, or the fan will run if the engine is hot, but the car is off.
Confused??

I would mount it on the radiator support. It should be grounded,
unless someone disconnected the ground to it. Power - yup, pull
from starter or alternator. Do you have an electric choke ? You
could tap off of that to trigger the 'safety' relay.
There is a switched hot lead near the wiper motor. It's a single pale yellow, I think, with a black female spade socket about 8"-10" from the firewall. Don't know what it leads to; mine was all torn apart when I got it and I didn't put it back to stock. You can pull a ground from anywhere on the engine block or frame. Hot can come from the big stud on the starter. Careful with your routing or you'll melt something when the exhaust gets hot. I just ran the lead all the way to the battery. I mounted my relays on the pass. inner fender.
I've seen a number of postes and the consensus seems to be mount the relay on the passenger inner fender. A couple have mounted on the fire wall, but i don't think it would be as accesible for adjustments.
