Ànybody knowing good articles on Heads - what type to select what lift specs to choose what consequences on basic porting etc so really basic info on what flow is about and what ways you have to tune...

Like put high lift and not that much duration on cam and you should have high revving engine...

I would suggest you get the vizard book on SBC heads and do a lot of reading,

A high revving engine needs a longer duration cam, not a short one.

i agree....take $50 and go to the local book store and buy two books...there is so much to choose from it will be difficult to only choose two....the library may be a cheaper solution...

Smokey's book is nice but not so much a step by step guide, for that book you do need a basic working knowledge of engines as smokey explains a lot of stuff and gives a lot of pointers but does not explain into detail the basics why somethings are done, preferred or necessary. I did like the book though, a lot.

One thing I found in smokeys book kind of baffles me and I think it's an error. On the pages about oiling systems he describes that the rear main always gets dirty oil from the oil pump because the V shaped passage that connects the vertical channel (w/ hidden plug) to the oil filter pad is drilled from pad all the way through the main (actually drileld from the main & the pad side). Now, he is right, there is a hole here where the locating tab for the bearing snaps in but the bearing covers that area and there's a normal (filtered) oil feed on the top of the main bore. What gives? Where did he come up w/ the fact that dirty oil is always pumped in there when using some kind of wet sump or hybrid system (dry sump has external fitlers & pumps so all oil entering at the filter pad is filtered)

Sorry for this hijack but that has kept me busy for some time and I don't think Smokey would make such a big mistake in his book *unless someone else wrote it down incorrectly)
