Grille question for a 69

I am trying to figure out how to replace my two side grilles on my vette. I had an idea....but... I need CF advise. You know the ricey mesh grills that you see on civics, I was thinking about putting it on the vette, but painted black. If this is a bad idea just tell me, but i would like some input. Thanks guys.

Here are some pics, they arent chicken wire, but should give a pretty good idea of what can be done for cheap.

Or this except painted black or maybe even body color

The left, right and center plastic grills for 68 and 69's are still available from the General for $25.34 each from http://www.gmpartsdirect.com.
