here is the problem, the drivers side door latch catches and the door will not stay shut, if you pull on the interior door handle a few time it will finaly work or you can slam the door really hard and it will sometimes help, also occasionaly the lock will get stck and the key will not unlock the door. what do you guys think i need to do?

Maybe your rods are bent/worn inside the door. Take of the door panel and observe when the door latch (at the actual latch on the striker) actually starts to release. Mine would move for about 2/3 of the handle movement before it actually stated to engage the release.
Most likely you have a lot of movement in both the external and the internal latch before it starts to press on the release. You can adjust the rod lengths and also bend them a little. Also check the door position (hinges worn?) and where the striker comes into contact with the door. The factory chassis service manual has info about the adjustment of some of these components.
The not latching when you close is possibly due to the door latch either needing a cleanup and lube or the position of the striker.
Be careful with the inside door handle. The latch is die cast and breaks. It just cost me $70 for that lesson.
My passenger side door did the same exact thing. Its hard to explain cause it was so long ago but if I remember correctly inside the door towards the rear of the door under the outside handle there was a vertical curved rod that connected two things and it would have a little lateral movement. Sometimes it would move and block off the locking mechanism so I couldnt unlock the door. So I got out the good ole jb weld and made it stop swinging. Didnt change anything and can still take everything apart so it doesnt have negative affects. Hope this helps.
