I disassembled a 69 speedo head to see where the problem was with the odometer. The steel gear that mates to the odometer gear was stripped. This was an original 69 head that had never been apart before, I had it storage the past 23 years. I bought a plastic gear from a vette speedometer supplier and found the dimensioning wasn't the same as original,I know big surprise!
When I installed the new gear and lighly spun the main shaft the plastic gear bound up in one spot. This is very similar to what I found last year with the replacement tachometer cross gears, after 3 changes due to poor craftsmenship I stopped using the black cross gears.
Below are the new and old, you can see what I'm referring to.
Question: Is this all thats out there for replacements? Have any of you had the same problem?
That looks like what happened to my tachometer gear. To prevent it from happening I am changing both the distributor drive shaft gear and the tach gear.
I did not know that the speedometer gear worked the same way. I am hoping not to have this problem with mine. The old one you have looks pretty chewed up.
That worn gear is a #2 gear it does have a different dimension.
The problem is you need to change the Number one(the one the cable goes into) that will fix you up.
The Tach doesn't have the #2,just a #1 and a speed cup assembly.
The # attaches to a #3 and that drives the Odo and Trip wheels.
