Many times I feel that my 82 up shifts too early and then has to shift down or lug along in the higher gear. Does anyone have experience reprogramming the shift points on an 82?
The shift points are controlled the old fashion way by governor & modulator. However, I think you are talking about the lockup which is ECM controlled. You can buy an aftermarket chip (ADS preferred, hypertech = junk) to eliminate TCC lockup in lower 3 gears. Otherwise the ECM is really not easily programmable, the prominator can do it (http://www.speedtronics.net) but the 7747 ECM is much better for the task as the bin & sourceed and widely available (the bin positions are available for use w/ tuning software like winbin, tunercat and the prominator software), they also offer an edge card connector for the 7747 and the later model Fbody ECM (can't remember the #) so it's plug & play. Talk to Bill Hitchcock, owner of speedtronics for more info. He's a real nice guy and always willing to help.
I installed a small electronic box from Ecklers on my 82 that eliminates the converter lock up in the first 3 gears.
It installs at the transmission. You unplug the connector coming out of the tranny and plug the connector into the box and then plug the box back into the tranny. Very simple to install.
Makes the car much, much, more enjoyable to drive and works perfect.
