Default Retorquing headers

Hello,

well last week i took my 71 out of town and on the way i went over some railroad tracks , and i was going really slow. in the prosses i managed to bottom out the passinger side header and now i have an exhaust leak. i was wondering if any one knows what i need to torque the funny fasteners to, they have an allen wrench looking hole and have a clip on the outside of them. im going to try this first before i try a new gasket. i have trickflow twisted wedge aluminum heads and hooker supercomp headers. thanks for the help.

I think you take the clip off then tighten them with an allen wrench then put the clip back on. Start with the center screws then move out to the ends. Check the collector too.

sounds like stage 8 bolts. A small wrench (can't remember the exact size.... 3/8?) also fits. I use a small wrench for most. There are 1 or 2 that I can't quite reach with the wrench so I use the allen wrench instead. You have to take the clip off first - it's a real PIA ! And then, at least for me.... I have to mentally "see" which direction the bolt unscrews so that I replace the clip on the correct side of the header!

Hope it's not the gasket leaking. I just blew my header gasket right at that area 2 weeks ago. It's amazing how sad a V8 sounds with a big exhaust leak.

That is why I go FAST over the tracks. Get a little air and you have clearence to make it over. That is if you have an incline to the tracks.
