Default Replacing Master Cylinder this weekend and have a quick question...

Do I need to bench bleed the mc prior to installing? I have gotten a 50/50 split from people I have asked so far. Anyone use anything other than the pedal pushing method?

Also, going to put in new brake lines and some other minor stuff.

Any other tips / tricks or words of wisdom appreciated.
Thanks
Shane

I followed the instructions that came with it. I put fluid in and used a dowel to pump it a few times before installing. No big problem.

Bench bleed the M/C, you must remove the air from the M/C before you install it. You have to then bleed the entire system. Buy the Motive pressure bleeder, it works the best and only runs about $60. Do a web search and you'll find them for sale all over.

I'm not sure if it is or isn't necesary to bench bleed. I've done it both ways and had good and bad results both ways. the bottom line to me is that bench bleeding is VERY easy and probably doesn't hurt.

In my opinion, you might as well do it.

I did the same thing, plus tapped on the side while pumping it untill no more air bubbles appeared. No issues

I bled the master cylinder per the instructions and then bled the calipers in order that the shop manual specified. Good firm pedal.

If you have a car where the MC is flat you can bleed in the car. If it slopes very much you will have a hard time getting all the air out if you don't bench bleed.

Hmmm, I want to find one of the stainless steel sleeved Mastercylinders and will definatly bench bleed. I have a bleeder but I'm not sure of my calipers, wont know till I tear into them.

IF YOU DONT BENCH BLEED IT FIRST YOU'LL FILL YOUR LINES WITH AIR i bench bled and still somehow was able to get air IN system - while bleeding , i broke a bleeder- had to get a new g.m. caliper and paint it red- so i took all the bleeders out and used anti-seize on all 6- was serious thinking of getting those bleeders with the check valve built in so air cannot get sucked in line.(any excuse for buying somethin for the vette)
