Default 77 engine removal question

I'm just about set to remove the engine and transmission from my 77 and I was hoping for a bit of advice from any members who have done this before.

My question is, can I remove the engine and tranny as one or should I disconnect the tranny and lift the engine first? It seems like it would be easier to remove the whole assembly if I can find the correct ballance points on the block to lift from.

I've removed everything from the engine compartment-radiator, condenser, lights, headers, generator, AC, fan, waterpump, etc....so I have plenty or room to work with.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Personally.... I prefer to take them out seperate.
It's less weight and easier to move around.... and you don't need to remove the hood!!!

I did just the opposite. I removed the hood and pulled the whole thing from the front.

The problem I have with pulling them seperatly is that you have to drop the cross member to lower the tranny enough to get it unbolted from the block. When putting it back in that way you can't get a torque wrench in there for the upper bolts either. I'm a stickler for that kind of stuff.

Just my opinion (have done it both ways) and pulling the whole thing is easier for me.

I just pulled my engine out of my 73 with the 4spd all in one unit.

I removed most of the accessories, unbolted the powertrain mounts and removed the driveshaft, removed the radiator, unbolt the top 4 bolts of the core support and loosen the bottom, pull the top of the core support forward then lift the motor out using an engine hoist capible of lifting 1000 lbs.

It worked great ...

Removing as a unit is the easiest/quickest. Man from Eagle is right about the crossmember as well. If you purchase one of those adjustable engine centering deals (see link below), it would make things easier as well.

Don't forget you'll need a trans plug (buy from a trans shop) or bungee the yoke into the trans to keep fluid off your floor and car!
