Default 69 power steering control valve play......

Just installed an Eckler's rebuilt control valve. While moving the steering wheel back and forth the ballstud moves laterally in the control valve body. Is this normal ? Does the ball seat spring keep everything tight while driving ? I can't road test , currently no engine in the car. I can't find any mention of this in the GM chassis overhaul manual.

it is normal for it to move. that is where the valve comes into play by moveing it opens passages to the corect side of the ram to supply power steering fluid.

With no hydraulic pressure, the ball stud will move back and forth. When hydraulic pressure is available, you won't be able to see much/no movement of the ball stud itself. When it moves say to the left, it diverts hydraulic oil flow to the power ram, and the power ram moves to restore the ball stud to it's neutral position. The power ram operates to maintain the ball stud in it's straight up position. That's how the power steering works,

Yeppers to the above posts. I'll add that technically I suppose this is probably more of a power-assist system than power steering per se not that it really matters all that much.

Also, be careful on start up -DO NOT start the car with your arm through the steering wheel. Many valves are not centered during build and the wheel will snap your arm off with the first application of hydraulic pressure.

Read the directions for centering the valve body.
