Default Fiberglass Monospring Update

New project is to replace the rear steel spring next weekend with a Vette Brakes 330lb monospring. My only question at this time is should I also plan on getting an alignment (all 4 wheels?) after changing the spring? From what I have read of others experience with the Vette Brakes spring is that the existing ride height can be achieved with the new spring.

I also heard that the ride height won't be that great with a fiberglass spring. I am still using the original steel spring since I don't want to be disappointed with the new one... the ride quality is supposed to be a lot better but the height ??? There are 8" and 10" bolts available to get the height back to where it should be... www.mcmastercare.com is the one of the best (and fatsest) suppliers for bolts, unless you want to spend $30 on these (incl. tax/shipping)
After any suspension upgrade the alignment check/adjustment is a really good idea.

i replaced my steel spring with a vette brakes 330# spring last summer and consider it the best upgrade i've done on my 79. get the end like bolt kit they sell also (i recommend the poly bushings). the bolt is much longer than stock with threads along much of the bolt. you have a wide range of adjustment, a lot of flexibility.

Default Vette Brakes Monospring Update

Just finished putting in the VB 330 lb monospring to replace the 7 leaf steel spring. Fairly painless process as long as you have room to work under the car. Just follow the instructions that come with the monospring. Absolutely no deal at all to getting the ride height the way I wanted it (27 and 3/4 inch). The steel spring used a 6 inch bolt and the monospring uses a 8 inch bolt. I used up 95 percent of the 8 inch bolt to duplicate the ride height I wanted.
The true test of course is the ride. Unreal the difference. I only drove 20 miles or so around town but talk about comfort. No need to dodge manhole covers or sneak up on rail road crossings. Truth of the matter is that I was pleased with the way my car road before. The spring that came out looked good with plenty of arch. But I am now in believer in the monospring. FYI I installed 4 each Monroe Sensa Trac shocks about 3 months ago. They seem to get along fine with the monospring.
The job took about 3 hours but I had the anti sway bar and coustom exhaust that in my mind increased the time needed.

Thanks Santa and thanks to Tony at Vette Brakes.

Good to hear the monospring is working so well and an easy install this is my next project. Just redid the whole front end using parts from VBP and I was extremely pleased. Funny thing is now that I've redone the front end the car sits about 2 inches higher?

Are you using the original stock springs? You may have installed the front springs upside down or they are not seated in the pockets correctly. I've heard that if this is done the ride height goes up a little. After I put my ZZ4 in a shaved about 100 pounds off the front suspension my car rides a little high in the front now. I have the solution though.......VBP 550# springs. This will lower my front ride height by an inch.

Yep original springs. I marked them when I took them out to make sure I put them back the way they came out. I'll check to make sure they are seated. I hope it was just all the new parts and the new shocks that caused the lift.
Thank's for the info.

pdgourno:

great news, I'm glad it worked out so well for you..... now this is making want to buy one, too...... darn, before I read your 'update' I was happy with mine .....

kona:

your coil springs are very likely not sitting correctly in the upper pocket, this is very hard to see (even with your head down there and a flashlight)....

This is good news about ride quality, I'm in the process of redoing my rear suspension and i glad to hear someone is installing the same spring. Sounds like I made the right choice.

Have you driven/rolled the car yet? The car will sit high until the car is rolled and the suspension settles.

Also make sure that you don't tighten the suspension bolts until the weight is on the suspension. Bushings will bind and cause the car to sit high.
