Default pulling engine

Pulling the engine and trans as one. Do I need to remove the shifter assembly from the 4 speed before the engine and trans can come out, or can I leave it on and drop the trans enough to get the shifter handle out of the interior. Sorry if the thread is confusing, im really tired. lol. Oh yeah, engine is a 350, trans is m20, car is 69

I took my entire shifter out, but you can probably just disconnect the linkage at the transmission and swing the rods out of the way. You will also have to disconnect the reverse light switch, speedometer cable and column interlock cable.

I have a Hurst shifter which is attached to the Muncie casing. I just had to unbolt the shifter handle and I left the rods attached.

Should be able to just remove the handle and leave the shifter in place.

The key thing is "What shifter do you have???" If it is a stock shifter, the shifter is mounted to it's own independent bracket on the crossmember is not bolted directly to the transmission like "Hurst" shifter is. If it is a stock shifter, I would think all you'd have to do is disconnect all your shifter linkage, speedo cable, u-joint at rear transmission yoke + "Z-bar" linkage. If it's a Hurst, and being bolted directly to the transmission, even if you'd take just the handle off, the remaining tower for the handle protruding upwards still MAY NOT clear the opening of the lower shifter boot & floor area. It's pretty tight there. I've had my transmission out three times in the last three weeks on my "now" 4spd '75, which has a Hurst shifter directly bolted to the trans and I could not drop the trans without pulling the shifter-it's just too tight up there in this area.

I did this two weeks ago in my 69 with 350 and m20...just unhook all the linkage, reverse light switch, and tranny lock cable..speedo cable too. I just hope i can figure out where everything goes when i go to put it back in.

I left my shifter installed in the car and just disconnected the shifter linkage from the trans. I have a 73 L82 with a M21. The engine and trans came out easily. I would definitely use an engine leveler to change the angles of the engine and transmission as you move it forward and over the fenders.
