I had to tweak mine rearward to get an acceptable fit. I have the L-88 scoop molded to the stock smallblock hood, and I would think they are all just a bit "unique"
Smalblocks are different than bigblocks. Given a size (big or small), one position should should work for all. After all, the General made the hood separately back in the day.
On all most every small block I've seen, the air box lines up all the way in the back..as for big block, I've heard it depends on what intake you go with.
Am I correct that there are both a long and short version of the L88 hood, or are do all L88 hoods eliminate the wiper door?
I'm planning on using the fresh air chamber on my 72, and have a wiper door setup right now (which may take a bit to get working, so maybe I should just skip it and go long hood?)
Does a short L88 hood look wierd (with the wiper door behind it?) Anyone have pics?

IMHO, the wiper door is part of what makes a '72 a '72, I would do whatever it takes to retain it. Plus, have you seen how the long hood matches up with the top edges of the fenders on 68-72s? Not very well.
I'm curious- has anyone ever made a functional cold air intake out of a stock BB hood (not L88)? The more I look, the more I like the more subtle look of the BB hood, but now I'm all stoked about the fresh air power...

I don't see how you could provide cold air to a stock BB hood.
I bought an L88 hood with the air plenum chamber from Ecklers. I also bought the standard L88 air cleaner. Everything fit. That is to say everything fit with respect to the carb/air plenum interface. The hood to the body of the car was another issue.
I bought my L88 hood from Ecklers in the 1970's. "Out of the box" it didn't really match the body of my 1969 that well and I had to spend a lot of money to make it fit the body. It's interesting to read in this forum, that people are buying this hood from Ecklers (today 2004) and apparently it still does'nt fit the body without adjustment. I would have thought Ecklers would have solved this problem; maybe making the L88 hood make an exterior fit with Corvette bodies is more complex than I would have expected. Anyhow, if you want an L88 hood just order one and make it fit. I have a 1970 BB and I'll probably order an L88 hood from Ecklers again.

That's what I'm thinking too. I'll let you know if I swap intakes.
CGGorman---does your hood close? We have an almost identical setup.
Yes, it does. No adjustments needed. The air chamber was bonded by the General three decades ago so I never actually look at how it lines up with the hood proper.
Thinking about cold air on a BB hood, if one cut intake holes in the front of the "dips" where they'd be out of sight, then made a big chamber in the inside of the hood to funnel the outside air to the cleaner, could a BB hood be setup for cold air similarily to the pic below, or would the shape of the hood create negative pressure (suction) and cause a problem at speed?
Any opinions? I realize that it's advantageous to obtain cold air from near the base of the windshield where the highest pressure is, but am skeptical that the pressure changes would be enough to make much difference. I already read skepticism about the effectiveness of the added pressure from intaking at the back of the hood...
