I had that same problem with them, and I didn't stay with them very long. Other people that I know have the same problem. I've been told that when their system loads up, it just dumps some users off to let more on.
I haven't had any problems since I switched to cable!

Do you have call waiting? When I was on Dial Up, I would get knocked off by call waiting. If I remember correctly you have to set it up so that when the modem starts to dial it cuts the call waiting off. Its been a long time, but I think it was *7 to turn call wait off.
If your on dial-up get rid of it, and then get rid of AOL. Go with either a cable modem or DSL. I'm on DSL and switched from AOL to Netscape and love it, I'd never go back.
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
Boy that brings back memories of the bad old days, I have been on cable for so long I forgot all that crap. What used to happen is ISP's would keep signing people up and putting the cash in there wallets instead of upgradiing equipment to cope with the new larger demand. It's called greed but I would think a company that big would have learned by now.
Get a new isp. AOL is overpriced and is an all around horrible way to access the internet. Cable or dsl is recommended, even their lowest speed service is light years better than aol dialup.
I'm a computer science major and have been a computer tech for years. Ditch aol and get a boradband connection. I'd reccomend cable over dsl, but get whatever is cheapest in your area. For a few dolars a month, i think 4 or 5, you can keep your aol account open and still use their email and keywords, etc. while on the broadband connection. Either that, or call up the guys at aol and tell them you have a monster c3 and will run them down if they don't fix your connection to the corvette forum.
I'd call their tech support. It might be related to call waiting. I've used AOL since they started as a company. I used to travel extensively and they were the only ISP worldwide with local free access for a long time. It's been about 5 years since I remember having connection problems with them. My neighbors have been through about 5 ISPs in the last 5 years after they go belly-up. AOL's price isn't bad now that they throw in a decent virus package for free...

I tried to switch several times, MSN, Verizon, DashFast, had Yay-hoo accounts etc. I send a lot of documents, photo's etc via email and AOL is by far the most user friendly. When I had other accounts people would always tell me they didn't get the info. half came thru or I never got their email back, they couldn't get the info or the I couldn't get the docs & pics to download. What a mess. To make a short story long , I do a lot of online personal business and switching my email back & forth was a real PIA and then you find out your new email account doesn't work or now you're getting 5-600 spam mail a day. It's just not worth it to me.
I'll stick with AOL for $12.00/mo, my wife gets free DSL to the house from work. You shoulda seen how much immediate spam we all got when started that account up. It was ridiculous, wasn't even worth starting email accounts.
I had the same problem. I had been with AOL for 8 years when I switched because of continuous disconnect problems within the last year or so . From what I could find out is that when time Warner purchased AOL there were some money problems. It appears (IMO) that AOL has gone to a time-sharing system to so the could reduce transport lines (save $$) and maximize the connections and bandwidth they have remaining. They bump you off has others try to connect to try and provide service. For example, Did you notice the "new feature" in version 9 software where you can auto connect if you have been disconnected?? There is a reason for that. They are filling every time slot available. When the pipe is all full - somone comes off when someone else is trying to log in. I think their connection algorythm shows that with all the users and availble connectivity that there will be an open slot when you try and reconnect - and most of the time you can - plain sucks. As a paying customer you should be able to hold the connection. Again, all IMO.
Drop AOL and get Earthlink. The service was better and they did not sell my email address. I run SBC/Yahoo DSL now and it works pretty good. I have used free Yahoo email for years and it works pretty well now and they never give out your email address to spammers. If any spammers have the address, they got it from somewhere else.
ahh AOL. the citroén of the internet. had it, dumped it and haven't looked back.
i had some computer problems earlier this year and had to use the g/f computer, she has AOL, it was terrible.
