Hi Guys,
I am getting ready to replace the timing chain in my L48 and been trying to decide what type of chain to go with. I see that there are double roller timing chains that say they are for my engine. What's the difference between the single row type that I have now and the double row roller type that they list for my car, and which one should I use. Also what's a good brand to go with, I've seen chains made by Cloyes, Dyna-gear, etc?

What he asked and add:
with a double chain is a new timing cover needed or does the old one fit?
Behind the upper wheel, right at 12 o'clock is where you may have to grind some material off the block - my chain fit fine, I was lucky and did not have to do that
here's a story for you....i went to check out the vette i bought about 6 months ('74 coupe), and i test drove it for only a short while, and it looked ok, so i got it. anyway, i had it transported to closer to my city and when i picked it up, i was about to get on the highway and smoke starts pouring in to the passenger side seat! i brought it to a shop right there and they lifted it while it was running and found a small hole had been drilled out in the timing chain cover. the chain was loose and had been hitting the cover on the bottom of its run. the oil was flying back onto the exhaust headers and smoking off....it's all good now....new timing set/cover/and harmonic balance while i was at it....very scary!
Yep, that's what I'm doing, new chain, 2 piece timing cover, harmonic balancer, and oil pan. Might as well do it all in one shot and be done with it, the oil pan needs to changed anyway it has a big dent in the bottom of it.
Just did mine. Get a Cyotes True Double Roller, Not the Street Double Roller. It costs the most about $70 and a gasket kit (you get what you pay for). Make sure you change the front seal. It will fit under the stock cover.

Yea, I had no problems using the True Double Roller under the stock cover. However, the only tricky part I had was in determine which keyway to use. For some reasons, the instructions didn't give much help.
