Went and got my 71 454 dynoed tonight and i was a little disappointed, only put down 247.5hp but it did put down 347.5 torque but either way I was diappointed and I want some more power out of it. I was thinking about a supercharger, don't have the money now, but figured I'd post and see what you guys had to say about it. Whats a good supercharger and how much do they run for it to be fully installed minus labor costs? Let me know what you think
The engine was supposedly just rebuilt before we bought it, so it should have around 3000 miles on it maybe a little more, but it does seem to suck up some oil...don't know exactly how much. We put it on an in the ground dyno, so those numbers are the hp to the wheels.
A Vortec supercharger for a SB is around $3000. I assume it would be about the same for a BBC as they can use the same carb. Only difference would be the plumbing I woould think. You would also need to spring for a serpertine belt kit. Say at least $300. You also need a blowthru carb like a Demon or Holley XYZ (not usre of model ), add another $500. So around $4000 to get the pieces.
You need to make sure the bottom end can handle the force of a SC. I read a lot of posts that say you should have a forged crank as th cast can crack with a SC. I personally know nothing about cranks so ask an expert.
We went to the dyno about two weeks ago. I have a SB 1970 Manual with the L46 350HP cam, my friend Don has a 1974LS4 454 AUTO.
There's tons of good info on BDS' homepage. I'm going for a complete kit from Hampton Blowers for ~ $3500. Don is a neat guy and has been building blowers/kits for years. The kit includes 6-71, intake, carb mount, plumbing and throttle linkage, etc. I'll be using a couple 4150 Holleys I got on e-bay. I've decided to go all-out and my engine is currently being built as a blower motor. You can put a blower on almost anything; the amount of boost you can run is based on fuel and total compression.
