I'm sure it's been asked over and over but here goes again.
What is the widest tire that will fit on an '81 with stock aluminum wheels and stock suspension?
What is the largest that will fit the same car using 17" wheels?
I couldn't find a clear answer by using the search function.
Thanks for your help.

255/60R15 - You might see this size mentioned on a door post decal, in your owner's manual etc as the optional size that was installed on factory alloys. The factory had to trim the fiberglass to make these tires fit I believe.

The nominal dimensions of a 255/60R15 is 27.0" diameter and 775RPM. You can look up other dimensions online and compare to prospective 'upsize' tires for 17X8 rims.
I'm not familiar w/ the sizes mentioned above, however these sizes come dimensionally close to being dead on and offer true performance tire options:
P225 55
P245 50
P235 50
