Default big block crank question

Is it possible to tell if a crankshaft is internally or externally balanced just by looking at it?

Default Hi nassau66427

This may help a little not sure, The only bb crank to come from the factory with internal balance was the 427. all other big blocks were externally balanced. If you have the balancer on the crank you are talking about you should feel a small weigth on the inside lip of the balancer if it is externally balanced.( sort or like a wheel weight.) If the crank is out of motor ,say laying on a table if it showes grind marks or drilled holes with filled weight it has been internally balanced. No expert but I beleive all crank balance on internal cranks is done on the counter weights. Their are great guys here who would know more than me hope they chime in to help,

Thanks, kanka. Crank is an aftermarket 4" stroke. It does have a lot of heavy metal in the counterweights.

That is probably internal balanced. You need a neutral flywheel and harmonic balancer.. Still have it balance as an assembly before assembling the motor regardless

All 366, 396, 402 and 427 cranks were internally balanced. The 454 was external. Look at the stroke. The 396, 402 and 427 all have 3 3/4" strokes. The 454 is 4". If this thing has extra metal in it is probably internally balanced and expensive.

Hope this helps.
