Just installed 2 new aftermarket speedo cables in my 79 with cruise. I seem to be getting a lot of bounce in the needle, particularly at lower speeds. seems to level off as I go faster but not entirely. Any cure for this? Is it the cables?
Thx, ESU in NY

Okay. Let me be the first with stupid questions; Was the needle bouncing before the cable swap? Did you swap in new cables to correct the problem (unsuccessfully) or were you running without and just got things working? As far as I know, the only thing that will make the needle dance is a bad cable. But if I'm wrong, others will certainly pounce.
I should have clarified, I started out with no cables so I have no idea if it bounced. If it is the cables, anybody have a source for decent cables? Chevy wanted a small fortune, mine are aftermarket from a local auto store.
I think you can bypass the transducer by connecting the cables to each other. If you still have the problem, it's cables. Make sure they are not bent too tight with the routing. Might not hurt to put some cable lube in each as well. Even though they are new, it's hard telling if they were lubed well during assembly.
Mine did the exact same thing your is doing and it was not the transducer. I took the upper cable out of the car entirely. I then removed the inner cable from the housing and cleaned it up. I then slathered the inner cable with White Lithium Grease, re-installed it into the cable housing and put it back in the car. It cured all of my bouncing and noises being caused by the cable. I need to do the lower cable as well but so far it has been a good year and a half and I am still trouble free. I would try this approach first as it is cheaper than replacing the trancducer. If your problems persist, then move onto the tranducer.
First you should take off the tranny end and hook it up to a drill. If it still bounces then go with the above advice, if not, then it's your speedo gears...
