No not the stuff I've seen in some guys hair, although that's got to be some strong tuff stuff, I'm looking for a high quality grease to pack my new bearings and hubs, to inject into my ball joints, tie rod ends and u-joints, they came already lubed with a light tan colored grease but I've heared red is the best, I went to NAPA and they have about a dozen different types, what's a good type grease?
That stuff has to get HOT before it gets all nasty, you know how some cheaper stuff kinda "pills" up...
But... most anything thats multipurpose/chassis grease is good enough for use in your car. Most of the guys I know just go for whatevers on sale! A tub and a grease gun... squeeze whatevers left in the gun into the tub, use the stuff out of the tub for wheel bearings, or greasing something up for rust prevention.
Scientifically? No clue... Feel wise, I'm spoiled by the marine stuff
Marine type was design to "withstand" different elements----salt and other chemicals found in the boating industry...... if you need a type of grease that will be in those conditions--then marine grease. A synthetic heavy-duty grease works GREAT--but-- a little pricey. Probly the best all-around grease is the synthetic multi-purpose grease. my 2c's--

this is good stuff for wheel bearings, u-joints
but don't use for steering box as it will be too stiff when cold.
Dont' use a chassis grease on wheel bearings - use wheel bearing grease for wheel bearings. On the other hand wheel bearing grease is probably fine for most chassis applications. NLGI #2 Lithium based typically.
GM has it down to 12377985 for chassis (incl steering gear) and 1051344 for bearings.

Turbo-Jet or anybody else,
What are some greases besides GM 985 known to work well for steering gear box rebuilds and hold up to the heat generated by it's proximity to the exhaust and not leak out.
