I have a 1974 vette. The headlights raise and lower with the switch under the dash but not when the headlights are turned on.Does that mean I need to replace the headlight switch?or could there be another problem.thanx
Probable answer is that the dash switch is bad OR if you are lucky, one of the lines got pulled off it and just need to be reconnected. Also, the lines may be swapped on the dash switch. This can actually cause problems as well.
It isn't really that hard to get to. Unscrew the dash. Loosen the steering column at the firewall and remove the two big bolts that hold the coulmn to the dash. This will let you pull the column down an inch or so. Yopiu should then be able to pull the dash forward enough to get to the switch. Don't pull the whole dash out since getting it back in there is an exercise in patience.
If the switch under your dash works, I would guess its a bad headlight switch. I doubt its a line because I believe the underdash switch is in-line with the headlight switch. Its just a fall back switch.
New switches ar cheap but they are hard to get at.
Also, the vacuum lines could be swapped at the headlight switch. If this is a new problem I doubt this is the case.
