While disassembling my THM350 for a total rebuild and by following the Haynes Techbook, I found the following problem, (if you have the Haynes Book it is step 8b.22 thru 8b.24) after removing the 2-3 accumulator piston I found the spring underneath was broke in three pieces. The bottom of the piston is gnarled up and I am sure needs replaced. The piston did not come out of its cylinder easily. It almost feels like there is a slight lip at the top of the cylinder. Can you tell me what I should do? Do I need a whole new valve body? Can I just get a new spring and piston and clean the bore up with Emory cloth? What else do you think I am in for or should look for?
Just curious as to what would have broke the spring like that. Seems like a fairly heavy spring.

Yes, any transmission shop likely has that spring laying around. Smooth the piston bore with fine emery cloth and replace the seal with a new one (your rebuild kit should include one); just don't overdo it and you should be fine. That piston simply smooths out the gear change.

Just time, use and age. Parts break, and that accumulator gets used every time the transmission changes from second to third. Nothing unusual, actually. I used to find a lot of them broken.
I was not able to drive this car when I bought it and was wondering what would the previous owner experience in the performance? Would he have known there was something not right with the transmission, shifting hard/soft?
I completely disassemble the transmission yesterday and noticed that ALL the clutch plates looked fairly new for a car that is supposed to have 120,000 miles on it. I am wondering if they realized that there was a problem and just rebuilt the core of the trans and didn't bother with the valve body.
