Is this aerosol dye a good way to go? http://www.yankeelady.com/willcox/wi...interior%20dye
I need to dye the vinyl seat covers, dash, and all the interior moldings.....pretty much everything.....black. I just ordered new black Al Knoch door panels and sunvisors and want to get this interior together. Any advice you all could give on dying this stuff would be awesome. Thanks....
The vinyl dye work great on interior parts of my 71but the prep has to done right. See coevettefaq.com and read the Lars papers. Prep and the right sanding paper/technique is a must. I used the primer and a lot of 800/1000/1500 sand paper. Light coats with wet sanding in between coats.
The vinyl dye was a little humidity sensitive in my case (it blushed) I had to paint most of my parts in side in the basement (air condition)
I do HOWEVER IMO think Paint/dye on seats would not WORK vary good due to the friction and movement abuse they take, but I could be wrong.

Get it mixed at a paint supply houseand use adheasion promoter.I have had mine dyed now for a couple of years and no problems.
I have dyed my interior twice in 10 years. It works fine on the plastics and the door panels but I didn't have any luck on the seats. I wound up replacing the seat covers with leather covers from Corvette America.
Just make sure you prep the surface first. wear surgical gloves and a final wipe down with lacquer thinner and a tack cloth. Light coats are always better than one heavy coat.

Thats exactly what I used, it's real easy and it came out great. I got new seats so I don't know how it stands up on seats. My interior was blue and is now charcoal. Here's the finished product.

I used the Corvette America stuff (which I believe several vendors also sell) on my interior parts. I originally bought a spray can to do some trim items, but then decided to do more (upper dash panel, steering column, etc.) so I bought a quart and used my "utility" HVLP gun. Came out very nice. I would not recommend doing the seats though, it really won't hold up for long. Stationary, non-flexible items only.
thanks for the input guys.... i'll check out coevettefaq.com, corvette america, and corvette central and do a little more research before ordering anything. i've never done anything like this before (car work/restoration) so i'm gonna have to find a real step by step on this prep stuff. anyway, keep posting if you have other ideas....thanks!
I'm gonna disagree on the seat thing a little bit. It'll work if you touch it up every once in a while. Back when I had my '78, the previous owner had dyed everything black, including the oyster seats. The dye would wear on the seats and I had to touch it up every couple of months. But if you're a cheap bastard like me, touching it up is simple and a lot less expensive than new seats.
One cool thing I found is that the dye works great on carpet, too, and suprisingly doesn't make it noticeably stiffer.
skip the seats , I had good luck with everything else. The seats looked ok , felt ok , but the upper and lower section of the seat would stick together. Buy a set of covers and the $25 interior video(ecklers) and do them yourself

I think it all comes from Corvette America. I got the best price from Wilcox and it came in Corvette America cans. I did everthing except the seats. Column, horn button, dash, all trim, roof panels, seat backs & bases. check out the pic in my earlier post above. everything matches.
As far as prep goes, just clean real good (general purpose cleaner &
rinse with water) dry and then wipe down with alcohol and then spay on the dye, light coats. It covers real well. Try it on your seats, if you don't like it then go get new covers. The only thing needing sanding is any metal parts. I thought it was going to be a hard job, but it turned out really easy.

I will do that...first I gotta get all of those pieces out of the car, which I'll be working on when I get back from school. Might have some more questions coming up so stay tuned. Can't wait! Thanks a lot...
I don't get it...how can Wilcox and other vendors sell CA's dye cheaper then CA? I was going to get a can of spray, but Wilcoxs prices are so cheap, I'll get a quart can and spray...

Thats what I thought, but Willcox is cheaper on just about everything.
I was worried that it would not be good quality but it is. I got my seats from them also.
