Default Hydraulic lifter ?

I'm ready to install new lifters (cam too), do I fill them with oil first or just lube the outside and slide them in? I've heard both ways.

Duke, my favorite method for lifters is to fill a coffee can full of motor oil and let the lifters soak in the oil a day(or two) before i am ready to install them. also use plenty of assembly lube on the cam lobes

i would think the more oil the better....can't see how getting them "primed" first would cause any problems....what does the repair manual say???

Yep. I use the bottom half of a coolant bottle. Soak 'em at least overnight in a quart or so of oil. B4 instaling the cam, put gobs of cam lube or white grease on the lobes. GOBS!

don't worry much about the bearing surfaces of the cam because starting from the first bearing, it will wipe most off them. Just make sure that there's a coating on the bearing surface that covers 360 degrees with no dry spots.

Same applies to the cam lobes, but there you need to really goop them up. Don't be shy here! Same with the lifters. Goop them up too. Even if they are soaked with oil (as they will be if soaked in it!) and it seems the grease won't stick to the bottom of the lifter. Don't be shy, again. You can't have too much lube here! Not gonna happen.
