I know a "J" on my VIN is for the 190 hp 350, instead of the L82

...That site doesn't appear to have the correct information......J is the base 350......try the Corvette Black Book for the right info.......

This site is the mother lode of 73 info:

http://www.corvetteforum.net/c3/vette73/index.htm

The VIN codes listed in your site are the 1972 codes.

In 1972 engine code CDJ was 350, auto w/ California emissions controls. The codes for 73 were different and there's no J code. Maybe yours was a late 72, titled as a 73??? I've had that with a Volvo and an MG that I've owned.

My thoughts exactly! The 68 Mustang's "hot" 302 4bbl motor is refered to as a "J" code motor. I think it was rated at 250 or 275HP. I'll take a 290HP 302 Chevy any day! I actually still have the one from my 69 Z/28 sitting on an engine stand in my garage (you "Nerds" out there, don't start getting too excited! my motor was blueprinted and the "DZ' stamping is long gone after we took the deck heigth to 9.00".)

Just a little FYI......The "J" codestar7 is referring to is found in the VIN which is on the driver's side window pillar.......CDJ is the engine suffix code, which is stamped on the front of the block on the passenger side on 72's....

from the idavette.net website:

Serial Numbers: 1Z37J3S400001 through 1Z37J3S434464

For Convertibles, the third digit is a "6"

Fifth Digit Code: J=350ci 190hp, T=350ci 250hp, Z=454ci 275hp
