Steeroids is one of those mods I really want to do to my 79. I have checked the pricing thru a few of the usual places and they run between $1,100 and $1,200. I have noticed that you can buy them for a camero or firebird for a couple hundred less. I cannot possibly believe there is a dime's worth of difference in them; just the word "vette". I have also noticed used rack & pinions for sell at the local vette shows at a tremendous savings. I was wondering if any of you have bought any used rack & pinion and installed it on your C3? This is worth looking in to.
Gene (MrVette) used a rack from something like a '92 Grand Am. This rack is apparently what the steeroids rack is based off of. If you don't mind fabricating, this is certainly the most cost efficient route.
It's worth it. Along with a overdrive tranny, and more engine power, I consider it to be one of the 3 key mods a '70s Vette needs.
Be patient...Speed Direct will do a group purchase -- they're a supporting vendor. That's how I got mine and saved some $$$. In fact, you can gauge support for starting one by starting a thread to see who'd be interested. I think you need at least 7 buyers to catch their attention.
If I could get the drawings I could get the brackets made for next to nothing. I believe that a good R & P used could be bought for in the $200 range. This is definately a possibility; although I won't rule out a group purchase. I'm just going to persue this angle for now. The more money I save the more I have available to spend on the vette.
