When doing your compression check you should as stated previously remove the spark plugs. You should also have the throttle open.
Also as noted prevously for a given compression ratio the compression test pressures will vary according to the size of the cam. Larger cams close the intake valve later in the compression stroke reducing cylinder compression.
A compression test is the single most useful test you can preform on an internal combustion engine. It will tell you more about the health of an engine than any other test.
