bought a battery/charging indicator that plugs into cigarette lighter (from Vector??, i think).
tried it on my 94 chevy p/u. shows 12.5 volts when engine off. 13.5 when engine running so i'm assuming it's reading the alternator charging the battery.
on 79 vette it reads 11 volts when engine off!!!! but 13.8 when engine running.
battery (vette) shows 12.5 volts across the terminals when checked with voltmeter (with engine off).
what would account for the "low" battery reading through the cigarette lighter?
The length and guage of wire add resistance and you get a voltage drop. The longer the length of wire the more resistance and the less voltage you get at the other end fron the source.
If it is just weak (ie., 11 volts) I would suspect old wiring plus some corrossion. If it gets intermitant, I would suspect a corroded ground somewhere in the circuit.
