Len i put in Pioneers...problem is the dash vibrates and buzzes with any bass....i also put some in my kick panels that i like and they don't vibrate if i had to do it again i would forgo the dash panel ones....
Len,
Just pulled the dash on my 77 yesterday and I purchased the 4X6 pioneers ~$42. These are only two way and I am following up with amp and subwoofers, but there is a 3 way version.

mark look real close before you put it in to try and firgure out where the vibrations can come from and try and isolate them....mine were the 100 watt version and i'm running a power amp also....

I didn't think about this but my son did and that's why we purchased the 2 ways for the dash. His opinion was that less bass might reduce the rattle/vibration. One obvious source is between the aluminum grill and the dash pad itself. There are three screws holding the grill down, then the speakers mount to the grill. I put black silicon under that grill for the reasons already mentioned. Thanks for the tip.

I have Alpine "plate" speakers that sounded good before the stereo stopped working. They might be outdated, I purchased them about 10 years ago and worked all that time with no problems.
I'm using Inifinity 4x6" speakers. "Plate" type with seperate tweeter and mid-range. Infinity is pretty much the best common brand of speaker around. Reference is their high-ish line and Kappa is their top of the line.

No, it's a '70.
Thanks for the input guys. Looks like a standar 4x6 will work.
I just found a pair of 30W Panasonic Sound Pumps II (EAB-692) in the garage. My neighbor gave them to me last summer before he moved away. Claimed they were never used. Still in styrofoam.

Thats what I'm gonna run. Plates love amps though.
As far as the bass problem, there is a "bass blocker" that is sold that will block frequencies below a certain level (ask you friendly neighborhood sound shop) that will get rid of the rattle. 4X6's don't have good bass anyway, they're better for mids and highs.
If I really wanted to spend money I'd get component speakers and mount the woofers in the kick panels and the tweeters in the dash (flush mounted) and run a pair of 10's in the rear, or a single 12.
The 80's hair metal will rock on, at least in my 'Vette anyway...
Boston Acoustics all the way around. there a little bit more but the sound quality is outstanding(as posted before) and the alpine cda-7894 is one of the best decks I've ever owned and is more powerful then most 4x6 can handle(plus it's built in highpass filter can take out the lows to reduce vibrations).
What ever you go with for speakers, you may want to try using a small bit of rubber between the speaker and dash to prevent vibration. Just cut a short slice off of a piece of 1/4" ID hose and thread over the screws between speaker and dash. This will keep it from falling out while installing and dampen vibration.
In my '71 I had installed from Ecklers four 4x6 (2 dash, 2 kick-panel) and a 2-**** Kenwood unit (modest power output). All this on good advice, and it's true cuz at speed with roof panels off and headers I only hear the engine anyways! Stoplights are for reality checks.
