watching "RIDES" on TLC. Focus on Jay Leno and his cars. He decided to do a "rad" rebuild on a 67 Toronado.
I'm watching them trash 2 corvettes (UN-F**kingBelievable) and weld their frames together to lengthen the chassis to put (i can't believe it) a Toronado body on it!!!!!! Noooooooooooooooo!!!!!

Jay did say that for us purists, the vette frames were destined to be crushed, so why not put them to good use.
Great project. I watched it last night. The Toronado was a cool ride with great style. Thanks to Leno and people like him who appreciate fine automotive art. Using the vette was explained in the show as a pure compliment, as it is GM's best structure and engine. It made total sense to me. Ask yourself if it would have been a better move to restore those 2 C-5's than to have created the coolest 66 Toronado on the planet.
Do you guys have any guesses on what that project cost?
If you listened closely their first idea was to use two vette frames but only ended up using one, I believe those where some type of GM test mules or prototypes that are crushed, GM was working with him, they also gave him the eng as well as the vettes.
I thought the project was cool as hell, I love those old Toronados and stuffing 1,000 hp sb into one is bada$$.
I've never heard a V8 with a singe turbo, let alone two... Did anybody else think that engine sounded strange? How do you get 425"? Why not go with something a little bigger (572, 632, etc) and save the complication of tuning, packing, plumbing for boost? Why not put some real meat under there? They could've at least slipped some custom 9" red walls instead of those 6" bike tires.

Cool show. I love "Rides". Leno's the man!
Was a guy here who built a twin turbo 427 sb. The eng Leno used was a 425 SB (gen III all alum I believe). 1000 hp and prolly knock down 20+ mpg on the e-way. Guess he went turbo sb because he wanted to compete with the 500 hp Bently coupe with the same technology.
Maybe they came up with 425 cubic inches because they wanted to match the original Toronado engine displacement. 66/67 Toros are one of my favorite cars. Joe
CGGorman, I think the largest gen3 blocks so far are around 470's, and that is with a nasty stroke and resleeving the block. Turbos can make some crazy power without the large displacement. There is a guy on ls1tech.com that is running a 346 cid gen3 engine and twin turbos. His car runs mid 9's and is pretty streetable.
