Default Door help

Ok, I went out to work on my vette, and I take off the interior door panel and, ::gasp::, THERE'S A METAL PANEL THINGY BLOCKING THE LOCK STUFF !!! How do you get around this thing??? I tried unscrewing stuff and unbolting stuff, but it looks like the only way to get to the inside of the door is to take a cutting wheel to it and then reweld it. I DON'T WANNA DO THAT!!! Please help me!

There is a water guard cover that is screwed on from the side. It has maybe 3 smaller philips head crews holding it on inside the jamb area. You probably want to pull that out first. The rest is all removable too. I guess I am unsure of the problem.

I'm assuming it's a '76, on the '77 I don't have a metal panel (maybe I should?). I've got the Haynes for '68 through '77 and I can't find anything on a panel covering locks. Do you have a pic? Maybe that would help. I'll see if I can find something in Haynes. Maybe someone will have posted an answer by then. But I'll check in to make sure.

Well what I mean by a metal panel is the actual door itself, after you remove the plastic water thing, how do you get to exterior door lock components? Can it be done?

Don't cut anything. Everything inside the door, including the outer lock cylinder, can be unbolted, unscrewed or unclipped and removed after you remove the interior door panel. I've done it along with a number of others on this forum. I do have a Chevrolet Service manual for my 77 and it helps. Good luck.

Try rolling the window up a little higher and see if you can get to it that way.

Here is the opening where I went through to change my door locks in the upper right..

You can see the lock at the lower left of the picture.

Hope this helps.

Had the same problem........went through every tool in my toolbox. What worked for me was a set of very long needle nose pliars. They go right through the opening in the upper right corner of the inner door skin. Same pliars are also great for the clip holding the brake pedal pin through the clevis.
