Default brackets

fabbed mine up out of two turn buckles and a steel plate all bought from jegs. the steel plate is a normal alternator bracket for a long WP BBC but I have a short one. I took the plate and trimmed it down to where only the three holes were left. I then bolted it to the lower part of the block with the outer two holes leaving the third exposed. Then hooked the turn buckle to the third hole and over to the lower alternator. the upper alternator hole has a turn buckle from it to the top bolt in the water pump housing. oh yea you have to put a 9/16" stud on the top WP housing. all works good and tight. I will try to get a pic for you a.s.a.p.

The best system for an alternator bracket is those from an early BB Camaro, they are readily available and the same as BB Vettes. I can post a picture as soon as I find it. Not exactly the one I wanted, but it`s a cast iron bracket that bolts to the left cylinder head. Strong and secure with out a lot of and lines up perfectly because its a stock bracket. This is on a LS7 454 that constantly sees 7000+ rpms with out fail. The same bracket is on my 68 L88.

Here are the factory mounts for a '74 LS-4 with power steering. I believe the mounts are different without power assist. It's quite a mess, and since pieces were bent, broken, missing and installed in the wrong positions, it took me a while to assemble them correctly. Much trial fitting. There are actually four pieces - three on top and the lower mount. The top three parts consist of that heavy, top bracket, and two strap type mounts that connect between the front of the alternator and the block. Here are the top brackets:

and here is a poor shot of the lower mount (hard to get the camera down there), which contains the adjustment slot and snakes all over the place:

Whether this is the best setup or just the cheapest one that Chevy could come up with, I'm not sure. And since the '74 is still up on jack stands, I can't tell you how reliable it is.

Actually, I can. The lower alternator bracket was broken and bent when I got the car, as was the lower power steering bracket. Both had to be replaced (thank you Carlisle), so they aren't the strongest units in the world.

I understand you now with the blower. Pullys and even location is a problem. Whatever it will be, it wont be stock.
