If you count out the L88,then I would say a 71 LS6 or 66 427-425hp car would do quite nicely.Let's not forget the 67-L89 435hp cars.Any of these should be able to go in the low 12's with some tuning.
Forget the list,Give all the cars 4.10 gears or better and see what changes!! The 69 L88 Auto- had 3.36 gears! Nice! If you plan on going 200mph. I've heard many a story about magazine tests(back in the day) and thier accuracy. Go to the Pure Stock drags in Stanton Michigan this coming fall and see how they REALLY ran.
Yeah I've always taught that the 66' L-72 vette is the fastest but shouldn't the 67' L-71 be just as fast? I mean it's almost the same car except it has 10 more horsies.
Or is that the 66' have just a single carburator and that the 67' have 3*2 barrel carburators? Is it that that makes the 66' faster?
And yeah I also taught the LS6 was one of the fastest, is it?
And how 'bout a 68' with a L-89? Should be pretty quick...
//thanks.
Edit: I also think that the "50 fastest" list is completly in-accurate.

I think all those cars are pretty fast. The 66 L72 was originally listed as 450hp. Chevrolet changed the rating to 425hp but didn't change the engine.
The LS6 was rated at 425hp. It has the L88 heads.But ut used 9.0 to 1 compression pistons.Same cam as the 435hp cars from 67-69 and a single Holley 780cfm carb.It has the advantage of being 454 cid compared to 427 in previous years.The only drawback I can see, is the car did not come with the L88 style hood,and carb clearance became an issue,they had to design a new intake that had shorter runners and sat lower on the engine.It won't flow like the 198 intake the L88/ZL1 used. I bet a well tuned/built LS6 would make 450-475hp on the dyno.My 69-L88 made 503hp in Pure Stock trim.
A close friend of mine...Sig Sutherlin held the NCCC pure A 1/4 mile drag racing record for a number of years posting a time of 12.78sec with his 66 427/425hp coupe ( Old blue) . He and a guy from the Nebraska Corvette club named Ron Bockerman sp? used to duel it out on a number of occasions. Ron had a 69 L-88 and held the record way back when at 12.58 sec I think. He now holds it with a run somewhere in the low 13 sec range after the others were retired. I guess no one wants to get out there and challenge it?? I tried to talk Sig into making a come back but I think we all but hung-um up.

Didn't the '66-'67 L71/L89's have poor heads compared to the '68-'69 cars? I know the '68-'69 L88 heads flow more than the '67 model from what I've read.
