Default Power Recommendations for the '82 CF?

My '82 runs fine, the engine doesn't burn oil and the oil stays clean, which tells me the bottom end is pretty solid and it may have been re-built by a previous owner. So I'd like to know what others have done (if anything) to get more power out of this beast?

1. I've heard that the fuel system will support 300 HP and the main restriction is the intake manifold. Any intake fixes?

2. Has anyone installed an aftermarket cam? Are there any hyd. roller cams compatible with the computer?

3. Any aftermarket Alum. cylinder head recommendations? Is more CR a good thing for the CF?

I will be installing long tube headers next week. TIA!

Headers will not do anything unless you tackle the intake.

I personally feel the cumpu 2040 or 2050 cam is a good choice if you combine it with some good heads, no need to go alu, some nice dart iron eagles will do the trick. The stock L83 has forged L82 464664 TRW pistons but if you step up to a smaller chamber like 64cc do keep in mind that you install a thing head gasket or your quench height will be way off (best is to have the block decked but that requires a total rebuilt). If someone had it rebuilt, maybe it's decked but probably not (are the suffix & block # stamped on cyl. pad still there?)

On the above link there are some guys that can help you out w/ stuff like bored throttle bodies, converting your ECM into a fully tunable flash rom system...and so on..and so on.

Great info TT, thanks! But what is the "cumpu 2040 or 2050 cam"? Must be a typo, are those Comp grinds?

What CR will I get with those TRW's and 64cc heads? What head gaskets do you recommend?

Thanks again!

Thought I heard that the TPI fuel pump was a good swap for these.

Compu but they are called something else now, they are comp grinds, they used to be called compucam 2030, 2040 and 2050. If you go to the comp cams page they will still list them there.

CR, well.. I'd have to calculate that but around 10:1, maybe a tad higher. I would recommend a thin steel gasket IF the deck is absolutely straight, if not the thinnest composite would probably be the ebst choice. Stock gaskets are steel shims also.

Yes, later model fuel pump is a good idea. The stock pump is fine for a stock engine but most pumps in these cars are the originals and 19 years old which means they are old & tired and won't be able to supply the flow needed to keep pressure adequate at WOT. A TBI replacement pump is a waste of money, the TPI pump is much more capable and no worries about pressure, the regulator controls pressure, not the pump.

Is there any computer tweaking required with these cams; or can I just "plug & play"?

Also, are there any computer friendly hyd. rollers available?

Thanks again!

The 2030 is plug & play, the 2040 also in most cases, the 2050 not. If the hyd rollers are speed density friendly they could work but if you want to get some decent power out of the engine be prepared to do some tuning, it's not that hard.
